The People’s Committee of northern Hai Phong port city on July 30 held a conference to announce the Prime Minister’s decisions on the locality’s economic zones, and officially launched the Hai Phong Free Trade Zone.

On February 12, 2026, the Prime Minister approved the establishment of the Hai Phong Specialized Economic Zone, covering approximately 5,300 hectares in the western part of the city. The zone will focus on science- and technology-intensive industries and services, including artificial intelligence, robotics, big data and chemicals, as well as research and development activities.

Earlier, on December 4, 2024, the Prime Minister approved the establishment of the Southern Hai Phong Coastal Economic Zone, covering approximately 20,000 hectares. On March 14, 2026, the Government approved the zone's master plan through 2050.

The Southern Hai Phong Coastal Economic Zone has been identified as a key growth engine for the city and a major marine economic hub. It is expected to support and connect with other coastal economic zones while contributing to the development of the Red River Delta.

The Hai Phong Free Trade Zone, covering nearly 6,300 ha within the Southern Hai Phong Coastal Economic Zone, is planned to include manufacturing areas, port and port-logistics facilities, logistics centers, commercial and service areas, and other functional zones.

Priority sectors will include research and development, semiconductors, information technology, automation, high-tech supporting industries, digital infrastructure and logistics, positioning the free trade zone as a strategic platform for attracting investment and developing high-value industries in Hai Phong.
