The Ministry of Construction has approved a revised national road network plan for the 2021–2030 period, with a vision to 2050, expanding the country's expressway system to 46 routes totaling approximately 10,106 kilometers.
The updated plan adds five new expressways and revises the investment schedule for several key projects to strengthen national connectivity and support long-term economic development.
Regionally, northern Vietnam will have 15 expressways spanning around 2,842 km, while the central and Central Highlands regions will comprise 14 routes totaling approximately 1,746 km. Southern Vietnam will have 10 expressways with a combined length of about 1,385 km, ranging from four to 10 lanes.
Among the newly added projects is the 327-km Northern Mountain Ring Road, which will connect the Ta Lung border gate in Cao Bang Province with Lang Son, Thai Nguyen, Tuyen Quang, Lao Cai and Son La. The four-lane route is scheduled for investment after 2030.
Other additions include the 378-km Northern Midlands Ring Road linking the Tan Thanh border gate in Lang Son Province with Son La; the 85-km Ha Tinh–Cau Treo Expressway in central Ha Tinh province, planned with four to six lanes; the 45-km Hue–A Luoi Expressway in central Hue city, which will connect the city's western part with the eastern North–South Expressway; and the 141-km Phan Thiet–Bao Loc–Gia Nghia–Bu Prang Expressway in the central Highlands, designed with four lanes.
Together, the new routes are expected to improve regional connectivity and facilitate trade and economic growth across the country.
